ふげん版モジュール型事故解析プログラム(MAAP/Fugen)の新たに改善されたグラフィカル・ユーザー・インターフェイス(GUI)が開発され、実際にふげんで利用された。新しいインターフェイスは、既存のMAAPのGUI-MAAP/FUGEN/GRAAPH- の上位版である(このインターフェイスが、GRAAPHのすべての機能を有し、加えていくつかの新機能を提案しているという意味で)。MAAP-PICASSOと名付けられた新しいインターフェイスは、ノルウェーエネルギー技術研究所/OECDハルデン・リアクター・プロジェクトによって開発されたPicasso-3の技術を基盤にしている。MAAP-PICASSOとMAAP-FUGEN-GRAAPHのGUIの主な違いは、MAAP-PICASSOのGUIが数値シミュレータから完全に分離していることである。このことは、GUIの向上、外部ソフトウェアや他との接続、そしてユーザーとの親和性を考えると、さらに高い自由度を与える。また、2バイト文字セット-すなわち日本語文字のテクストを表現する技術も含んでいる。MAAP/GRAAPHに与えられるグラフィカルプラント情報をPicassoプログラミング言語で自動的に取得・再利用するために、特別のソフトウェアが開発された。このソフトウェアは、「ふげん」のプラントデータ上だけでなく、Fauske社から与えられた他の原子力プラントの画面でも実証された。新たなGUIは、MAAPコード自身の最低限の修正が必要になる。しかしながら、それらの修正はパラメータ通信のためだけで、MAAP自身の数値計算をじゃまするものではない。GUIは、モジュール型オブジェクト指向プログラミング技術を使用して開発され、「ふげん」のユーザーからの現在及び将来の要求に応える拡張と変更が比較的容易に行える他、MAAPコードの将来バージョンとも互換性と有する。MAAP-PICASSOは、HP UNIXワークステーション上でのみ、開発され現在稼働している。しかしながら、新しいPicasso-3のNT版が、1998年2月にハルデンプロジェクトから公開されるだろう。これは、MAAP-PICASSOのGUIの適用性と使いやすさをさらに高めることになろう。
